TV Review – Styled to Rock – Season 1 Episode 1 – Rihanna + Fashion! (SE01EP01)
First off they are trying to make this a very ‘cool’ show, Rihanna talks a lot about ‘superstars’ and loving London and ‘fashion edge’ and innovation. London is also name-dropped a lot even in the first 3 minutes!
Before the show even starts we get to see lots of Rihanna talking about the designers who have been picked prior to the show, again lots of words like ‘sick’ and ‘dope’ are flung about. The main prize of the show is to dress Rihanna for a big London festival.
We also get a personally selected fashion advisers, Rihanna seems really excited about Henry Holland, her comments about Nicola Roberts sound a little ‘fed’ to her though – I do think that Nicola is an excellent choice though. We then get introduced to Lysa Cooper, she also loves London and has dressed Rihanna since the start. She is also a little older and offers a nice balance to the advisers.
I think we get a music star related to the show each week, first challenge involves menswear and Kanye West. The challenge is meant to check that they can work to a brief. Rihanna then leaves whilst an ‘I love London’ plays in the background…I think the show wants us to know it’s in London!
Then we get to meet the designers…Jacqueline is the kooky one, she likes murder mystery and wants to be called ‘Madame’. Meganne is second in, she reckons that fashion is elitist and seems really annoyed with the world..kinda scary! Zainab seems really passionate about her job and really motivated to win. Ricky I really warmed too, he in a Londoner but has an amazing American twang to his voice from living and working with them. I just really like his smile and his personality and he looks like he has his own style too. Ben is currently studying fashion, he actually ended up homeless in Peckham but found a way out through fashion. Heidi is absolutely crazy, she talks really quickly and gesticulates all the time! She also really can’t control her nerves and gets very upset quickly..eek!
Sally, another of the designers is already struggling, she doesn’t do menswear and also doesn’t really like hip-hop! She owns her own boutique already which is impressive and seems to come up with an ok idea despite her reservations.
I enjoyed the ‘judging’ part i.e. the catwalk moment with their designs, the contestants can see the judges but can’t hear what they are saying. It was a little odd though they Rihanna wasn’t watching this section but then had to chose the winner. I think this section will work better when the ‘client’ can be there in person too. After the catwalk section some of the designers get called out to explain their creations and their thoughts behind them. Photos were then sent to Rihanna to pick a winner, the three mentors then have to pick a loser to leave!
Rihanna picks Zainab as her winner, I don’t really know how she did that without seeing the outfit in real life and seeing the movement and finishing of her work but hey – it was a nice outfit! At the end of the show there is a little cut scene of Rihanna meeting Zainab face-to-face to tell her congratulations – it feels a little stuck on.
The first week bottom two were Ricky and Sally…oh no, not my Ricky! Queue some tears..they then go into a dark room with the mentors to discuss where they went wrong. Sally is the first to get sent packing…fair enough she couldn’t do menswear at all and the skinny jeans were not good at all. Yay for Ricky being safe!
Henry Holland I think works well as a mentor, he makes a few witty comments about the contestants and is a designer who has really exploded in the last six years.
Nicola didn’t actually get much screen time in this episode, she seems to be the one who empathises with the contestants the most. She was good in the judging section though asking a few important questions about the outfits. Her downfall came when she was reading from a script, it was a little robotic in places.
Lysa I thought also had some great comments relating to what the designers were actually producing, as a spectator rather than a designer we obviously miss things that she picks up on. She was also witty in an American not understanding British people way!
Will I be watching Episode 2? Yes I think I will, these shows always take a while to get going, is it as good as my favourite show ‘Project Runway’ I’m afraid not. Major issue for me…it’s a little disjointed in terms of who is there at what stages from the judging team, both Nicola and Rihanna seemed to disappear for sections of the show.
Next weeks guests are Pixie Lott and Rizzle Kicks – both will actually be there!
