The Voice UK – Season 1 Episode 3 – can we just move onto the next stage now?
Welcome back to the Voice UK – we are now in week 3 of the show!
How is everyone feeling about the Voice after the first few weeks? In my camp we are all talking about how it’s getting a bit boring…I think the blind auditions needs to come to an end sooner (we’ve still got tonight and next week to go) – just because it’s a little repetitive and no-one is really bad – there isn’t much excitement in the decision making from the contestants either. I really hope the drama kicks up a notch and we also see more of the presenters – Holly and Reggie as the show progresses?
The first contestant Joelle Moses has been a backing singer for Rihanna amongst others so she has some experience of being on stage already, but in the background rather than being the main star, she’s only 21 but already has five years experience behind her. She looks amazing in her red and black dress and performed Rolling in the Deep by Adele – all four mentors turn around, Danny pitches in with the respect card, Jessie J says that she will write a song for her that could be a duet…hard to compete with! Willy says that her can take her to another level and Tom Jones says his feelings for her come from the heart.
In the end after a long deliberation Joelle Moses chooses Will.i.am for her mentor – he looks very pleased!
Jay Norton is the first male up, he’s moved to London from Liverpool to chase his musical dreams but is currently a waiter. He aptly sings ‘I Need a Dollar’ and Will.i.am turns around for him pretty quickly – he’s got a great rhythm and quality to his voice, I think you would recognise it on the radio pretty quickly. Oooh and right at the end Tom Jones turns round too! Willy does a really good pitch to Jay – I would go with him, he seems very keen on him – and he joins his team.
Allyson Brown is a former MOBO winner back in 1998 she won best unsigned talent – but her career didn’t progress from their, she just went back to school and a contract never materialised. Great song choice in ‘Somebody Else’s Guy’ – such a funk tune! Very strong opening bars – I would have turned round pretty quickly. I wonder if the judges are thinking she’ll be older than she is from the song choice? She slipped a note at the end though, eek that was a tough one, no-body turned round and Danny looks disappointed as does Jessie J upon seeing her.
Leanne Mitchell bless her is a holiday park entertainer (think Butlin’s Red Coats!) she’s 28 and wants to become an artist through this chance, she chooses Beyonce’s ‘If I Were a Boy’ for her audition song. I didn’t really like her audition, I thought it was a little too much at times, Danny and Tom turn around for her though. Danny talks about vocal training and Tom talks about song choices and the breadth she can cover with her voice. In the end Leanne picks Tom Jones – Tom is picking a right old lot of big voices for his category isn’t he! He is up to seven contestants now.
Little montage now about the contestants and mentors flirting, it was pretty boring.
Cassius Henry is another slightly familiar face, he’s already been on TOTP you know. Little sob story here – tut tut the Voice, he turns up with his mum in a wheelchair and then talks about when his little brother died – are they setting us up for a failure here with a sob story? He sings Closer by Ne-Yo – he can manage the lower bits of the song but his voice isn’t strong enough to do the ‘and I just can’t stop, I just can’t stop’ bits in the song – I wouldn’t have turned around – but Jessie J and Danny O’Donoghue both do. Danny pitches that he was in a band before and has had a second bit of the cherry successfully. Jessie lets him know what she would do to improve his singing.
Wow big fight between the two mentors and Cassius looks really torn…eventually he picks JESSIE J!
Denise Morgan gets picked by Tom Jones – why! She didn’t sound very good at all, neither did Murray Hockridge but he also joins team Danny in this quick segment.
We have a cheerleader up next from Exeter University, she seems very nervous bless her, we like her outfit though. She sings Lady Gaga’s ‘You and I’ – good song choice but she doesn’t quite let her vocals go properly, seems like she is under-singing it a bit, the mentors look a bit unsure about Hannah’s performance but then Danny and Tom turn around. She does have an unusual quality to her voice in places though – could be a dark horse as she’s only 20 too. Berney ends up on Danny’s team, really thought she was going to choose Tom Jones there!
Next up we have a very short contestant, he works in a call centre at the moment but obviously thinks he can do more – the Voice he feels is a great opportunity for him to be judged just on his voice. He plumbs for Cee-Loo’s Forget You as his audition choice – great song to get the crowd on your side, he does have a good smooth and clear voice, great diction. It doesn’t looks like anyone is going to turn around for him though – and they don’t, aww bless him. Cris Grixti is send on his way.
Bill Downs looks quiet the cutie pie – but oh dear he’s just got engaged and in his photos he looks like a poser – yeah I’m not feeling him any-more lol! He sings a Bruno Mars song and Danny turns round for him – I probably wouldn’t because he sounds a bit karaoke in places – and yep he’s straight on team Danny.
I just got the first pang of boredom then before Kate Read comes on and starts singing ‘True Colours’ another great song, her voice is a little ropey in places, could do with some refinement, but then she is only 19. Willy and Tom both turn around pretty quickly. Bleurgh about the Mum’s weight comments though – bit of the tugging at the heartstrings again. Tom is right though – it’s the invulnerableness in her voice which is interesting. She goes for Will.i.am in the end – probably a good match for her age and image as well.
Quick montage again, Kirsten Joy adds another girl to Jessie’s team and then a hahahaha she picks someone who really didn’t sing very well – ouch. Ruth Ann St Luce won’t be missed by the other mentors.
Alys Williams sounds Welsh when she sings her Adele song ‘Someone Like You’ she’s a single mum to twins in her ‘day job’. Aww no-one turns around for her, it was a good audition as well.
Nathan James is next up, he’s a choir singer turned rock singer – he’s quite a good looking chappy with his long blonde hair. He chooses ‘Livin’ On a Prayer’ by Bon Jovi to sing, he has got a rockers a voice, I think he’d be a good addition for something different to the competition. What a let down as no-one turns round for him – missed a trick there.
Hmm not sure about Tyler James playing the ‘I was friends with Amy Winehouse’ card for his audition – he looks a slightly dodgy character too. His audition isn’t very good, his voice just isn’t strong enough when the song ‘Sittin’ on the Dock..’ gets going. Say what? Big Willy turns around just at the end so he’s automatically on his team.
I tuned out again until Bo Bruce starting singing the Guetta song ‘Without You’ I quite like her vocals, there’s a lovely tone to her voice. Sounds very similar to Diana Vickers in a way, oh and Will turns round at the end too! Good for her. She chooses Danny due to the fact that she believes they will have more in common.
Gotta say I am looking forward to the next stages of the competition but I’m thinking that next week will be a little boring again..the clips that they show at the end didn’t look that exciting either..gotta say David Walliams is looking more and more appealing on ITV1…
