The Voice UK Battle Rounds 2 Review/Blog – Shock for J Marie Cooper and Ben Kelly
THE VOICE UK BATTLE ROUNDS EPISODE TWO – 22 APRIL 2012
Battle 1 – David Faulkner versus Cassius Henry - Beat It by Michael Jackson
Quite interesting in the VT prior to their performance as it looked like Cassius was really playing a tactical game of not showing his full performance before the actual live ‘fight’. Jessie was constantly trying to push them to be more aggressive and give more to the battle. The battle definitely lacked the drama of some from last nights episode, I would say Cassius took this round but I don’t see a winner in him. Woop Jessie agrees with me!
Battle 2 – Barbara Bryceland versus Leanne Mitchell – Edge of Glory by Lady Gaga
This is more like it – two powerful voices in these two – Barbara is certainly up for a fight in this round too! To me Leanne’s voice was more interesting to listen too, she definitely won it for me on the verses where Barbara seemed to lose her drive a bit. I was definitely listening to Leanne more as the song went on. Excellent battle though, after a dull start to the show. It is Tom’s choice now though, does he agree with me? Loved Will’s comments in this round about being like melted chocolate on the seat as Babs sang to him – hilarious! As his winner Tom picks Leanne!
Battle 3 – Frances Wood versus Kate Read – Ironic by Alanis Morrissette
Again a very interesting VT, it seems the pair are already good friends but Francis outshines Kate in terms of volume until Will takes them into the studio and Kate’s style and interpretation of the song marks her as the winner in the studio. The battle was a pretty awful one, it reminded me of Year 11 Talent Day – both couldn’t hold the tune and large segments of it was totally flat. I would sack both off. Neither will win. Mentor Will talks both of them up well but ultimately chooses Frances to take onto the live shows, poor Kate.
Battle 4 – Aleks Josh versus Emmy J Mac – Broken Strings by James Morrison
Well Emmy certainly has her game face on for this battle and seems to have out-thought Aleks before they even get into the ring, Alek doesn’t seem to have much confidence in himself and perhaps hasn’t got the experience of Emmy in terms of performing in front of audiences, bless his he has never sung a duet before. This seems to bit above his experience level.
In the ring they are actually more equal, Alek grows with the song but to me Danny should choose Emmy she seems to have more confidence in her ability and ultimately has the better voice of the pair. Say what?! First one I’ve called wrong, Danny picks Aleks commenting that he can mentor the contestants more than Emmy.
Battle 5 – Ruth Anne St Luce versus Ben Kelly – I Wanna Dance with Somebody by Whitney Houston
Wow they whizzed through these two really quickly, very odd. I am guessing they don’t think either will win. Jessie J chooses Ruth even though she couldn’t really sing the song, then again neither could Ben who looked like he’d had about 20 Red Bulls before the performance.
Battle 6 – Matt and Sueleen Fletcher (duo) versus Lindsey Butler – Born to Run by Bruce Springsteen
Interesting song choice this one, one you don’t hear much on talent shows, quite hard getting the duo aspect into the battle as well because it’s obviously two voices that have to sound good together combined with another solo vocal that also has to sound good without just blending.
I don’t like Matt’s voice much in the duo and Lindsey seems to out-sing the duo with her powerful vocals. Quite a hard one this though – I can see something different in the duo but going purely on voice I’d go for Lindsay..over to Sir Tom! Tom goes for the difference and Matt and Sueleen win!
Battle 7 – Hannah Berney versus Murrey Hockridge – Kids by Robbie and Kylie
This was another yawn-tastic battle, neither were very good by Hannah was better and rightfully Danny chose her – not a winner though.
Battle 8 – Indie and Pixie (duo) versus Becky Hill - Irreplaceable by Beyonce
I would say that during the VT Pixie and Indie are painted as quite an annoying duo who can’t really sing very well and Becky definitely had the better voice.
The battle was a total mess, all over the place and totally flat in places. Everyone is saying the duo have improved a lot too – eek. I’d pick Becky, much more interesting voice and Jessie J does just that, she needs a lot of work though.
Battle 9 – Adam Isaac versus Denise Morgan – Someone Like You by Kings of Leon
Poor Tom, his category is a bit pants tonight, it was a really short clip they used which is code for crap it seems. Adam bless him looks really uncomfortable out there but then the lady is totally forgettable as well – I’d pick Adam for his youth and looks I’m afraid..and Tom does.
Battle 10 Sophie Griffin versus J Marie Cooper – Firework by Katy Perry
There is ten years between these two singers and also a wealth of experience gap. Sophie is the 17 year old from a small town whereas J Marie is 27 and has her professional backing singer career behind her.
Such a hard song to sing this one – old KP can’t even pull it off live, the two were actually very evenly matched though vocal wise, a tough decision to chose between the two – perhaps J Marie has a bit more ‘spunk’ about her though. Hard one and all the mentors are divided, Will says it is like choosing between two versions of himself, the winner though? It is Sophie who wins Will’s heart though, aww I feel for J Marie that is a let down for her I am sure.
Battle 11 David Julien versus John James Newman – Dakota by Stereophonics
Great song choice Danny thanks for a blast of Dakota on a Sunday night! Again a hard one to pick between, both same it very well and I think it’s really just a choice of preference in terms of whose voice you like more.
Great battle this one – shows her cruddy some of the others have been – they truly are pushing themselves all the way. I think I would go for David based on his youth and also his voice. Poor Danny is reduced to tears trying to make up his mind but he goes for David in the end.
