Popledge Reviews – Madonna with ‘Girl Gone Wild’ – second single from MDNA!
Madonna – Girl Gone Wild – Song Review
Song review for Girl Gone Wild…so after a quick name change..(reports suggest that Madge was going to get sued by the creator of ‘Girls Gone Wild’), Madonna has unleashed her second single from MDNA after ‘Give Me All Your Luvin’ which I would say was a flop in the UK (number 37 isn’t good for a lead single for any artist.)
Where I feel sorry for Madonna is that she’s got such an amazing back catalogue to keep up with Open Your Heat, Papa Don’t Preach, Frozen..the list can go on and on but she is trying to fit into the current Top 40 trends which I think means she’s onto a loser because there is a lot of dance music about at the moment and by it’s definition I don’t think dance music is as emotional or intelligent as other music (in the majority).
So in conclusion it’s hard to be Madonna at the moment. Therefore I try and review her songs without taking into account her past history, just judge it for NOW as if it’s a new artist emerging almost.
When ‘Girl Gone Wild’ starts I am immediately reminded of Britney Spear’s ‘Femme Fatale’ album especially the track ‘Hold it Against Me’ – which to me isn’t a bad thing, then I’m getting flavours of Chris Brown’s ‘Beautiful People’ in the mix and that sort of generic David Guetta style beat. The lyrics are pretty bland, basically about the female race having fun – they could be a lot more intelligent as we know she is capable of. Her voice as well isn’t quite strong enough for some of the songs moments, the ‘hey hey hey’ bits I think should have been tackled with a lot more force. As the song progresses I am wishing that it was a bit more personal to Madonna – it’s a song which is more age appropriate for a 20 year old – I would like to hear something a bit deeper from her or something that relates to her life a bit more now – something a bit more honest maybe?
The song ends whilst I’m still mulling all of this over in my head and I’m left well…underwhelmed. It doesn’t make me want to sing along, doesn’t remain in my head and when compared to the success story of ‘We Found Love’ (a similar recent song) it pales in comparison.
However, as part of an album I wouldn’t skip past this track..I wonder if they have looked over some better tracks on MDNA…or at least I hope they have…
