MP’s calling for Gary Barlow to retutrn OBE as tax scandal rumbles on..
It’s the story that refuses to go away but at the point of writing this Take That (well 3 of them and their manager) have yet to comment on this tax story.
The press have definitely decided this is their story of the summer and want some action to prove themselves. Questions were raised yesterday about Gary Barlow’s recently awarded OBE – Labour was calling for the singer to hand it back over the tax scandal.
Currently ‘Icebreaker 2′ the tax scheme Gary, Mark and Howard have ‘invested’ in isn’t illegal and we should remember that, however in our opinion we cannot excuse 40 year old men from choosing what many would consider a morally wrong decision about their financial affairs. There is a saying ‘if it sounds too good to be true then it probably it’ and it seems that the TT boys were a bit greedy in their choices.
Gary Barlow will also come under fire due to his relationship with David Cameron, the pair campaigned together at the last election and many think it is unfair that the PM wouldn’t answer questions specifically about the singer after he had called Jimmy Carr ‘morally wrong’ previously.
One speaker in the house commented, “If it’s all so morally repugnant, why has he (Gary Barlow) just been given an OBE in the birthday honours list?”
Shadow treasury minister Catherine McKinnell also said that even though he had done nothing illegal, Mr Barlow should return his OBE.
“If he’s using a tax avoidance scheme then, yes, I think he shouldn’t be rewarded with this national honour because it doesn’t send out the right messages to ordinary people who are paying their fair share of tax,” she told the BBC.
The band and their manager have all been asked to comment but have all so far declined, Gary’s last tweet was before the story broke which I don’t think comes across well.
Perhaps if the boys had done a bit more digging into the company they would have found out that Icebreaker 1 was shut down as an illegal business and this should have rang alarm bells for all three.
We have been tweeting a lot of people about this subject and most fans seem to think that a statement has to be made and soon as their silence seems incriminating.
As ever leave a comment below with your thoughts…we also ran a previous piece on this subject which has some great fan comments on it, you can read that here:
Thanks to all that commented and who tweeted us @popledge about the subject, we’ve had some great discussions!
