Lucy Spraggans’ ‘Beer Fear’ – off iTunes but on Amazon! Little Mix Conspiracy!
Lucy Spraggans’ ‘Beer Fear’ was spectacularly taken off iTunes by X Factor UK bosses today.
“That song could be number one,” said Louis Walsh on last weekends show which saw Lucy receive a standing ovation for the song. Indeed it could have been, fans found her independantly released Top Room At The Zoo via iTunes and started downloading the track in droves, the track even ended up in the top ten.
Embarrassingly perhaps for X Factor bosses the song was set to beat last years’ winners Little Mix to the number one single spot.
“Oh dear the album is coming offline guys, in preparation for some things coming up… Not my call to make, get it while you can!” wrote Spraggan on her official Facebook page.
“All contestants have been asked to remove their recordings as it is essential that all the contestants are treated fairly during the competition and, where possible, receive the same exposure,” an X Factor Spokesperson concluded.
It seems that the X Factor was caught off guard a bit by their own new rules, allowing people to perform their own songs ultimately means that they might already be available to the public.
A show insider explained: “It’s a difficult one because on the one hand, we’re delighted for Lucy, and it’s testament to how great the song is and also what a huge impact this year’s X Factor is already having on the pop scene. But on the other hand, The X Factor is a competition and it has to be a level playing field for all contestants.” Indeed they made iTunes downloads from the live shows ineligible to chart last year.
My cynical take – SyCo don’t want Little Mix to be upstaged by a song that they won’t make any money from.
At the time of writing, Lucy’s song was still available on Amazon for download.
